does L98 have internal or external h/balancer
hello again fellas,
another question for you, does the L98 engine have a internal or external harmonic balancer please?
and when buying aftermarket harmonic balancer which brand to get and what outer diameter to get also please ?
apart from helping with vibration, what else do they help with, any power ?
i saw such brands as tci automotive,Ati, pioneer inc, streetdampr, and fluidampr e.c.t .
thanks
regards

Your '91 has a 1 piece rms crankshaft that is internally balanced at the front and externally balanced at the rear. So you need a neutral balanced Harmonic Damper. I bought a 6.75" SFI approved elcheapo damper that Scat sells. Others may recommend the more expensive Fluidamper,etc.....but from what I could find it's just not worth the money. One thing to note is that the timing marks can be marked differently because GM used a couple of timing pointer locations. No big deal, find TDC and mark it......

I just finished building a new LT1 388 and I bought an ATI Super Damper for mine. It measures 7.530" in diameter. My part number, 917274, is for a LT1, not a L98 though.

Just buy one of the many dampers listed for your year and model car. Then you won't have to be concerned with diameter, balance, timing marks, etc. BTW, ALL SBC dampers, except for the 400 or special, non-stock applications, are neutrally balanced, up front. Follow the instructions in your FSM for installation.
