Default 1986 has no spark

The car now starts and runs fine. It passed all tests suggested below, and a new capacitor assembly with its new wires and connectors fixed the problem. Its wires were damaged from engine heat. Thanks, everyone, for your expert assistance.

1986 coupe with 4+3 trans. will turn over but will not start. No spark at plugs. Ignition wires are good. Car has been sitting and started every 2 weeks - now all of a sudden, no sparks. I have a Haynes manual and plan to test the high voltage circuit. Any hints, tips, most likely items, etc.? Thanks.

Have you taken the distributer cap off and inspected it.or checked to see that the distibuter has power.

Hi, Had the same problem with my 86. After changing the coil and ingnition module I found that the culprit was the pick-up coil which is accessed by pulling the whole distributer. Hope this helps.

.....could be coil or the ignition module....check the hot wire to the distributor to see if you have +12vdc.....if so, the next place i would check is the coil (there is a test for this in the field manual)......if the coil checks ok, the next is the ignition module which is easy to replace......after that, there is the assembly (can't remember the name right now!) that requires teh distributor to be removed and the gear to be removed to service.....

Test your pick-up coil also.

Can anyone give me a GM part number for the "capacitor assembly" ? Is this available at Auto Zone or other generic auto parts houses? They are having a hard time identifying it and need to be sure before they order it. Thanks.

Found one at AutoZone, #U518 for $11.00. Their computer listed it as a Capacitor, but not a condenser. Then the receipt listed it as an ignition condenser.
