Comp Cam 7-306-8 in LT1? Any users on here?
My latest magazine has an artical on the LT1. Since I'm about to rebuild my 95, I'm very interested in such information. In it the author states that "one of the most popular aftermarket cam grinds is the Comp Cam PN 07-306-8, or CC306 for short". This grind has 230/244 duration at .050 with 510/540 lift.
This seems rather ratical for a street car to me. I can't believe it maintains good vacuum. Several years ago, I had been told, by a cam manufacturer rep, that the GM hot cam (218/228) or other aftermarket cams in that duration range (such as the Comp Cam 7-502-8), was about the upper edge for good streetability, now it sounds like that might be in question.
Those of you running this cam, could you comment on this cam, Hows the drivability? Any problem with power brakes and other vacuum operated equipment? Auto trans? I don't mind a little loping or fast idle, but I would like to be able to drive through town without a lot of trouble.
Thanks

On my old 383, it produced about 12" of vacuum, which was just enough for the power brakes to work, as well as the A/C. It had a nice lope to it like the LT4 hotcam would have on a 350. Its true the 306 cam is much better suited for a 383 rather than a 350. This cam would be harder to tune on a 350 due to the amount of overlap. Just be ready to deal with the slight loss of power on the low rpms as well as some cam surge on a highway cruise. An ideal cam for a street 350 would be the Comp 503 which was 224/230 @ .050 and just slightly less lift.

many ppl run that cam on LT1's...its a proven hot combo but yes, it will suffer in daily driving and low rpm power. it will have poor brakes but you can fix that with a vacuum assist canister.
Properly tuned it will run hard all the way to 6500rpms. stock heads LT1 will make 350-360 whp.
its a bit of a old grind, been around for years. has somewhat lazy lobes compared to todays new cams. I'd try the XFI 230/236 on a 113 lsa over that cam. I hear the XFI idles smoother and is more street friendly with the wider LSA

I have the CC306 in my 383 but would run something with less duration for a 350. Many in the F-body crowd have used this cam for the street with stock CI's so it can and has been done many times. I agree that the grind is a bit long in the tooth and there are better cams now. but still it is a proven winner.

I basically have the XFI version of the 306 - my car is a 350
Mine is 230/242
I never had the 306 in my car so I can't comment on that but my car has an awesome lope that I love - and I have zero problem with my brakes. I can't remember off hand how much vaccuum it produces but again no brake problems here.

IMO, a Lt4 cam is worth the time to put in, I had CC306 in several Lt1's with stock heds even and loved it, It will need a tune for sure, but after that is will thump. A 224/230 is a another good street cam, I tade tamer than 306, but still nice. My 94 Z with a 355 Lt1 has 240/248 solid roller, and it it's a blast
