Default CDN-86 Bose Radio Repair?

Original Bose radio/cassette player in my late-86 Coupe. Lately the tone controls have been very 'scratchy' when trying to addjust the slides. Also the cassette has been 'kicking-out' of loaded/running tapes. Suspect I need belt adjustment/replacement work done? Any suggestions for reliable repair/rebuild shops for these early Delco/Bose units, preferably located in Ontario, orCanada? If possible I prefer to keep the original set-up. Thanks, friends!

Don't know of any north of the border, but have read good reviews from Dr Don's work.

Yes, thanks Agent86! I've heard good things of Dr. Don, but would prefer some place in Canada, if possible. Must be someone - a lot of GM's, not just Vettes, were sold up here with the Delco/Bose setup. Agent86, do you think another auto-radio shop could repair these, or do I really need a Bose radio specialist? Thanks again!

My 86 roadster was doing the same thing. It turned out to be the speaker relay. You should check out this relay before you yank out your radio and send it off for repairs. Here is where you can get one:

Thanks for the info - can I ask where exactly in the car this relay is located - I assume it is not with the amp(s)? Probably inside the dash somewhere? Cheers!

Look on the carstereohelp site. The show you pictures of the radio removal, and the relay removal.

That sounds like a good lead! Any Cdn-guys, or any other Forum members, deal with them? Or can recommend them? Thank you!

Last I checked, the only authorized Delco/Bose repair facility in Ontario was Mass Electronics. Apparently, all Ontario GM dealers send any and all problematic Delco/Bose head-units and speakers to them for repair.

www.mass.ca

I should mention, it's been a while since I looked into repairing/overhauling early C4 head-units, so Mass Electronics may no longer be the only authorized Delco/Bose repair facility. Best bet would be to call and ask; the last I talked to them, the price they quoted was expensive!

And I'm sure that other electronics shops can probably repair your head-unit.

Good luck!

Thanks for the lead - I checked their site, and they say they do not deal retail - they want people to deal through Dealerships. Ouch - that says pricey to me!? Since they are relatively close to me, maybe I can visit their office and see if they can help me. Oh, and their site only list Vette's back to 2000 for services!?

Here is a PDF file which illustrates where the relay is located and how to go about installing it. FYI

Try and get your hands on the relay connector and unplug it, then install a new one and tuck it up into the dash.
To remove it from the dash support brace, will take a lot more work. As in removing the crash pad or dash pad.

I recently had the Bose stereo/tape player in my 86 roadster rebuilt. Dr. Don will not repair an early model Bose system, claims that he can't get the parts. He will however, steer you toward an expensive after-market replacement.

One of this Forum's members told me about Factory Car Stereo Repair in Florida. http://carstereohelp.com/bose.htm. They totally rebuilt my early model Bose unit and it now works just great. They also gave me a 12 month warrantee on the repaired unit. Check them out they are good people.

If you remove the upper dash pad, you can get to the relay from the top without too much effort.
