Default Charging battery while still installed

Is it OK to charge the battery in my '84 while it is still hooked up to the car? I'm wondering if the battery charger could do any damage to the electronics/computer.

Don't try and start the car with the charger attached.

I have heard quick chargers cause havic when the battery is stilled connected to the car, but never heard of trickle or regular charger causing problems.

You should not have any problems charging your battery while it is connected to the car! Chargers that put more than 16.0 volts across the battery can do some damage, but battery chargers normally do not put more than about 14.7 volts across the battery.

Thanks guys for all your replies..this will save a few minutes of unhooking the cable. Need to get a new battery, old one charges up fine, but goes dead after two days of not driving. Problem is that I left it hooked up to the car all winter without starting it for 3 months and it was dead as a doorknob...I know, stupid thing to do, but I thought I'd be starting and driving it once a week , but our winter up in Canada this year was totally brutal!
