Default What Exhaust system do you recommend?

Not sure if I posted this in the right area, please move if needed...

I have an 89 coupe with an a4 and it is time for a new exhaust system. I currently have the "Off-road" dual pipes exhaust system from Mid-America and would like to replace it with headers, x-pipe and nice looking mufflers/ tips. I don't have an air pump or cats any longer because we don't have emission checks in Minnesota, so that is not an issue for me.

I would love to hear any suggestions, part numbers, pics of setups you are running.https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ies/bigear.gif

Thanks

If it were me in your position, I'd search for long tube headers that are known to install easily and hold up well. I'd have them ceramic coated inside and out. Then I would mate them to a used LT1 catback that someone is discarding.

Note: If you're making more than 400HP then the LT1 exhaust won't work so well as aftermarket.

You could buy some long tube headers and an X pipe and have an exhaust shop install them. That's what I've chosen to do since there isn't really anything available that is a bolt on. You could do that and see how it sounds since the mufflers are a separate issue.

That system you have I think is 2 1/4 pipe, which would be big enough to hook some long tubes to. I've chosen these mufflers:

They are for L98 cars, and despite what the Corvette Central description says they are stainless. I don't trust an exhaust shop with making the tips look good, so that's why I chose these. I'm just going to drive it there open headers and have a system made. I realize its a (scary) Corvettebut hell there aren't but a couple bends in it, how hard can it be for them, right?

I also chose Hedman Elite headers(but won't recommend them other than they fit GREAT)and Magnaflow cats and X.

Corsa. Immaculate fit and finish, great sound, and no resonance drone.

Since youre already converted to duals buy the kit for an LT1. Or cheaper yet, you could just buy the kit for an L98 and hook the Corsa mufflers up to your head pipes.

I like the Maganflow # 16837 it's stainless steel, it's 3" with polished mufflers with dual round 4" tips. You can buy it for half the price fo the 2.5 Corsa system I paid $653.00 including shipping. The site lists it for $729.00 however there is an additional discount when you check out.

I'd ditch the duals. IMO, all they are good for is impressing the ricers. I would think you lose the scavenging effect. I'd get a set of TPIS Long Tube Headers, a good cat or test pipe and a good system for the rear like a Borla.

Default 90 L98

I went with TPIS long tube headers, high flow cat and a Corsa catback. Sounds great and no resonance.

Thanks for all the replies!!

Those of you who went with TPIS Headers, were there any installation or ground clearance problems? Are they ceramic coated inside and out or can I have that done?

JonnyAngle - I live in Champlin, work in Minneapolis. How do you like the Hooker Headers?

DarkBlue88 - I love the look of those, I have a red car and want to switch to some black 5 spoke rims. Those will match nicely!

Only installation problems I had were that a couple of the slip fittings had to be bumped up a tad. Still, I'd rather have that than it being too loose. Something about throwing a hot dog down the hallway doesn't do it for me. No ground clearance problems unless you want to have the car lowered a bunch.

Can't remember but I think you can have it done. Call TPIS.

I have an '89 with hooker long tube headers and custom true dual mid-pipes back to the rear differential with no cats or resonators. Was tied into the factory L98 catback. TERRIBLE resonance. Just bought a used LT1 catback from a forum member and installed it yesterday. Easy install, rear brackets from L98 mufflers fit the stock LT1 mufflers. Resonance is completely gone. LT1 stock catback is awesome, HUGE pipes compared to L98 system, it is stainless and the bends aren't kinked down like the L98 system. This has to be the best $50 I ever spent. I suggest anyone with an L98 upgrade to an LT1 catback. It is about 25% quieter at idle now, but it was too loud before. Sounds very healthy, and it still rocks at WOT.

I have borla stingers but I am not too happy with them. I have TPIS LT headers and a Random Tech cat. They are loud and the wife doesn't like to ride in it too much for too long.
