I would go 383 personally. Not fact but if I wanted to ensure no oil eating I would go with the shorter stroke plus a hyper piston and regular tension rings. The power is all in the heads and cam and its associated components like intake/exhaust etc.
It's all about creating a 'plan' of the whole entire package.

Time to start a new thread. This one is full of cobwebs.

Yes indeed.
I dont know why guys are afraid of the thinner ring packs they are everywhere in todays cars.
Went the 383 route too DID want a 396 though but to do it right there was a considerable difference in cost.
Still did mine up for $2100 +cam cant complain.
Jimi dont waste your time with LE2 heads on a 396 get some AFRs or AI

I've been bitten by the stroker bug as well. Was going to just be a crate 290/350 combo from GM but amazing what a couple of calls with tpi 421 vette will do to you. I'm seriously considering the 396 now. I thought about an LS swap but I like the gen 1 convenience of just drop in. That and I've read my share of horror stories about "good deals" on LS1/T56 combos that turned out to be nightmares once the buyers took the valve covers, oil pan, or the intake off to inspect.
I want an engine I can wind up past 6K rpm. Lots of "enjoy picking pieces of your crank up off the ground" remarks if talking cast iron. The forged route is money but it sounds like the way to go if you want rpms... and I do.
So I want a high reving stroker that has a bullet proof bottom end. That was supposed to be the 383 but by the time I reinforce a 383, I'm pretty close to a mild 396 I'm guessing. So I've put myself in a corner at the moment with the 396.
But then I hear the talk of minirams causing some stroker builds to lean out once the rpm gets lofty. It's like the more I push with the "let's do a peaky 396", the more crap I find pushing back.
I should just commit bank account suicide, say screw it and do a 427 build. Really wish you hadn't shown me those pics of that 427 build, Jim.
