Default transmissions 700R4 vs 4L60E

What's the difference between the two transmissions?
Can they be interchangeable on an 86? Or is the 700R4 the only one that works with the ECM?

4L60E is an electronic trans, you will need a computer to make the trans shift.
Any reputable trans rebuilder can make the 700R4 handle as much power as the 4L60E/4L65E, and prob for less $$$

You can run a 7000R4 /4L60 without the ECM; plenty getting around on carb engines Only needs mechanical switch to lock convertor.

4L60E is all ECM control
If you are looking at a 700R4 , get the later one with 30 spline input shaft.Has upgrades over earlier (pre '88 ??? ) models

93 was the last year for the 4L60 (hydraulic governor) 94 and up use the 4L60E which requires a computer to function.
