I had a chance to look at 89corvetteken's before they went on his 383, and they were absolute eye candy.

Congrats Brian !! Based upon your signature showing a Supercharger as well.... I'm going to guess you're going to be very happy with the end-result !!

That's another thing people forget or don't realize. The build quality of these heads is just as incredible as the flow numbers they put out.

Just an all round killer head that's ready to bolt on out of the box not to mention we get frequent Q&A sessions from the designer himself (Tony Mamo) on here to help us out in our applications. Can't go wrong with these

Looking forward to seeing your results Brian!

Clearly you bought into the "Pack Mentality" and the AFR leg-humpers club. I mean we all know that there are more cost effective heads out there. Geez, what are you thinking Brian?

Did I mention the pair I bought from Vette Threat are in my garage waiting for me to put together the 383 bottom end?

He could have bought these heavily ported Darts from AI that I was considering:

205cc Intake Port Volume
Fully CNC Ported Intake Runners
Fully CNC Ported Exhaust Runners
58cc Combustion Chamber Volume
All Edges Fully Hand De-burred
Steel Jacketed Viton valve Seals
Stainless Steel Super-Flo Int/Exh Valves
2.020" Intake & 1.600" Exhaust Valve Dia.
Pacalloy Beehive Springs for .600" net valve lift
4130 ChromeMoly Hardened Retainers, Locks, and Locators

Less flow heavier valve train and beehive springs? In the words of Dr Evil: "How about NOOOOOOO Scot!"

Did I mention the pair I bought from Vette Threat are in my garage waiting for me to put together the 383 bottom end?
Looking forward to hearing your results especially, the drivability reports.

Keep an eye on the Ti retainers, my springs chewed through one of mine after about 2 years of use...luckily the inner spring kept the valve from dropping into the engine.

Interesting.
I have a set of the original AFR 190 LT1 heads that I put on in about 1998 or 1999.
They have titanium retainers and I now have about 40K miles on them.
No problems so far -- never been touched.

Did you go with extreme springs?

Titanium Retainers on my 210's, probably 15-20k miles, no issues.

Brian, are you going to flow them?

The NEW 195 number are quite a bit better than the old AFR 210 flow numbers that I have, congrats!

On my old 383, with my titanium retainers I had around 50k street miles and over 1000 1/4 mile passes.....never a problem for me.

I thought about it.
I'll have to see what's around here.

If I didn't buy the large chambers for the blower I would just put them on the stock engine to see what kind of difference they made.

I'm a member of the AFR Leg-Humpers Club twice over!

It's also nice to know that all of the LT-series Street Eliminators come with titanium retainers.

My 180 SBC & 195 LT4 AFR Eliminators are so meaty and the decks so robust that each AFR head weighed 10 lbs more than a GMPP Fast Burn head.

Also made the Fast Burn heads look fragile.

What I think is interesting is that all the supposedly well qualified engine guys on this forum are all praising the purchase and use of the nice AFR head...on an old, tired bottom end that will not hold up to any type of racing duty! Yeah, great idea, spend all your money on heads/cam/blower and put together a combination that will blow up! I have to ask; how many of you have operated 600-700hp engines in a racing environment? Did you find that a stock 140K mile bottom end fit the bill? You guys are amazing... Have you even seen first hand what happens to an engine when it lets go during a race; not jerking around on the street, I'm talking a connecting rod failure at 6500-8500RPM. Let me tell you, it isn't pretty (pistons kill the cylinder heads, rods kill the block and cam…) and he just might be buying these heads all over again; along with a block and even a camshaft. This is pretty good indication of how this forum works... Have you guys ever heard the phrase “you have to finish the race to win it”?

Maybe I missed it but where did he say exactly what bottom-end he'll be using? Where did he say it'll be revving to 8000 and have 700hp?

Here's a pic of mine...

Broken one...

About to break...almost all of them where like this, you can see where the spring was just slowly cutting through the retainer

The springs are not over the top springs at all, both the retainers and springs are made by Isky, springs are #8005-A...400lbs/in rate.

I would recommend inspecting any new cylinder head for machining trash. Stick your fingers in the ports to feel for rough edges on the cnc cuts, and to see if there is a silver film oun your finger.
Never trust any new casting to be clean.

Thinking about heading to NED on sunday to race the daily driver. Let me know if you are aware of any locals heading up.
