Miniram vs. LT1 Intake Vs. holly tunnel ram EFI intake
One of the threads on thirdgen.org got me thinking, especially after I read what Kenn did. I've seen a few MPFI setups where a TPI plenum was adapted to work on a dual 4bbl intake. Other than using the TPI plenum, this sounds basically like what Kenn did. This also sounds like it could make for a much cleaner installation than the LT1 setup, and much less expensive than the Miniram. The biggest problems I see with the LT1 intake is that there's no coolant provisions, no distributer hole and the throttle body sits so low that interference can be an issue. This intake would seem to suffer none of those types of problems. By modifying a stock plenum, I could keep all of my stock sensors and wouldn't even have to screw with a new throttle cable.

So... does anybody have any information on this base? Holly lists the power band at 2,800 to 7,000 rpm. How does this compare to the miniram or LT1 intake?
Does this sound feasible to anybody?

That would be interesting. I bet a machine shop wouldn't have much problem matching the bottom of your plenum to that. Looks like those bolts would be a bear, but maybe you could get them in through the old runner holes. Then you could use block off plates on the sides of the plenum. That would allow you to grind out the sides for even more for access.

To me, to make an L98 plenum work, you'd have to somehow seal the sides of the plenum box, cut large holes in the underside and still find a way to bolt it to the lower base without creating a vacuum leak...plus as you said, clearance issues with the IAT, IAC, TB linkage, dist...
Sounds like ALOT more work and fabrication than it's "oooh ahhh" factor is worth. A miniram would be cheaper, less of a headache and alot cleaner of an installation. My two cents...

The sledgehammer had an intake like that.
They took the stock plenum, sealed the sides, cut the bottom and welded it onto a tunnel ram intake.
At first I over looked it as it appeared that it was a TPI.
Now, what would this intake give you over the LT1 design?
here is the Sledgehammer intake:

You would have to have those funky nitrous bosses cut off and weld on bungs for the injectors.

Lowflyer, a Miniram is somewhere around $1200. That Holley is under $250. For $500 I can have everything including fuel rails, injector bosses, etc.
Vic, I need to do some more research on that. There may be enough material near the fuel rail mounts to mount the injectors. Otherwise I'd have to weld the injector bosses to the runners.
I also think this will sit high enough that I won't have any of the clearance issues that I would with the LT1 intake.

It sounds feasible to me. I have been researching this same subject for quite awhile now. I don't really see any problems going that way. If you build it keep us posted. I hope to have my own built by summer.
