code 41 intermittent 86 Vert

Lizardlver15: a 41 means the Prom is toast. A 41 has nothing to do with anything else. Whomever told you it needed a new EST may have thought you meant a Code 42 (or if that is what you're getting, start a new post). I don't know of a source for a new Prom but someone around here can probably reference a site so that you can get the number and then one of the Vette wrecking yards should be able to fix you up.

Thanks -Very Helpful
I did a little research for 1986 automatic:
1228109 code AANL is automatic with 3.08 gear ratio
1228107 code AANK is automatic with 2.59 or 2.73 gear ratio
Now you know what to google. I've had bad experiences with HyperTech chips. Too much knock. Try to find a stocker.
BTW the "165" refers to the last 3 digits of the ECM part number 1227165. Google that P/N, you'll get a bazillion hits. Very popular ECM for diy tuners. Used from 86-89 in F &Y car.

Still looking
Although I was able to initiate the order online ... today it was cancelled because the PROMs have been discontinued.
It really is looking like I'm going to have to go with an aftermarket PROM.

Hypertech
I broke down an ordered the HYP-126022 exact replacement PROM through summit racing. It's on backorder.
Hypertech tells me that their chip is lifetime warranted if I were the original owner ... not. Anyway I hope I'm not wasting my 200$.
When it comes in I'll update youall on the status.

Burning Brakes
You are making this code 41 a lot harder than it is - the problem is either a bad/loose PROM, a defective ECM or a bad ground. Period.
You already Have a reman ECM. For the money involved (Approx $100) just get another ECM and plug it in, same PROM chip. Old electronics die, sooner or later. The ECM you have is Already on it's second life..
Then, If you still suspect the chip as the problem get another one - since a "stock" chip is nearly impossible to find (and you probably wouldn't want it anyhow..) just plug in the new hypertec one. Or burn your own (if you want to get that far into it..).
All assuming of course that you really have verified the ground points/circuits first. First - Before starting to throw parts at the thing

Race Director
DaveP85C4, can you ID bin ABTD? Supposed to be for an 86 L98 but have been unable to find it. If this will work in rhaker's 86 I may have a deal he doesn't want to refuse.

I think when my alternator went bad it damaged the PROM
I've been told they are rare items to go bad ... but this one was definitely bad.
Just prior to this hypertech prom going down I had to replace my alternator. That and some previous jump starts may have been what damaged the PROM.
I spent a month futzing arround with this issue mostly since I was attempting to source an OEM Prom, and another ECM didn't fix it.
In the end I'm glad I replaced the Hypertech thermomaster PROM since it turns on my fans sooner ... not that I believe I get any better HP figures etc.
