Is there a way to check out a water pump for leaks and proper opertation while it is off the car?

Not that I've ever heard (if you mean by pressure testing or for proper flow)...I pressure test on the car and/or look for signs/traces left by dried coolant.

If you have the water pump off the car, an your not sure if its the original, just replace it,to much work to do it again. . You can test them easy on the car but not off....WW

On the L98's, I'm not sure. On the LT1's you can check the bearings by turning the splined shaft and make sure everything is tight. That's still no guarantee it won't leak. Mine was tight when I put it back on after replacing the Opti, then it started spewing coolant after I got it out on the road. If there is a question, better to go ahead and buy a new one.
