'84 C4 stock - what are the HAWK HPS brake pads????????????
I have a stock '84 C4 that needs new pads all around.
All I do is drive around town - no racing.
Want to try the HAWK HPS's. (or maybe the ceramics????)
(Tired of brake dust).
I have emailed HAWK and have gotten conflicting info. They make them / they don't make them for the '84.
DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAWK HPS PADS WORK PERFECT ON AN '84 C4????
Can you confirm what I think they are:
HB112F-540 rears
HB173F-570 fronts
Pro's and con's HPS vs HP+ vs ceramic???
Tips on installing???
Outlet for the for best deal???
THANKS in advance.

Their website doesn't list anything fitting for the '84. Those part #'s are the same as for an '85 though.
On dust, the HPS pads are dusty. Not insane, but a bit worse than most stock pads. For a street car, I would think the HP+'s are overkill, but I've never used them. The ceramics are probably better, but I haven't used them either. On ceramics I'd wonder about how hot they will keep working, but maybe they are great.
For buying, you might want to look at Summit Racing or the Tire Rack for good pricing.

I have the Hawk ceramics on my '96, and am happy with them - very little dust. Ceramics are fine for a street car, but not a good choice for the track. Good luck!
*edit* - check out http://performancepeddler.com - they list the Hawk ceramics for 84-87.

I put Halk ceramics on my 88 because if the dust problem on my 35th. Great for street use but if they get wet or there is any rust on the rotors they chatter.

The HPS pads will dust somewhat, but no worse than the OEM-style GM Durastop semi-metallic pads. I have used the HPS pads on my 87 for autocross and they work well. Cold bite (stopping when the pads are cold) is very good, they do not squeal and they will last for a long time for general street use.
The HP+ pad is a semi-metallic pad that works great for HPDE or track day events or autocross. They need some heat in them to work and they will squeal when cold. For track day use they will turn a wheel black in half a day. Not a "race" pad, but streetable if you don't mind the dust and low-speed squeal when cold.
You may want to look at the Raybestos QuietStop pads; they are a ceramic material and are the equal of the GM OEM pads. Ceramic pads will work fine for general street driving and they will handle some heat if you decide on some occasional "spirited" driving.

'84 Hawk HPS specs: Front: HB173F.570 Rear: HB112F.540
Just installed these - now it has to stop freaking raining so I can break them in!!!!
So how many miles can I expect out of these in regular around town city driving (no hiway) - 10M, 20M, 30M, 40M, 50M miles?????
Does the wear indicator make a squeaking or scraping noise???
Thanks.

Getting ready to replace the pads on my '85 and have a question for you guys that have recently done it with the Hawk HPS - That's what I want...
When I tried to do this in the Spring with pads from Napa, what they gave me was NARROWER than what came off the car - I don't know what is on the car now or where they came from, but the look correct - they cover the full width of the rotor surface.
What they wanted to sell me would NOT have covered the full width of the rotor - leaving almost 1/4" on the inside and outside not covered by the pad...
Does anyone have experience with this? Do the Hawk HPS pads cover the full width of the rotor? Please help - I need to get pads and get them on before a trip to the dragstrip in 11 days!
Thanks! - Chuck :-)

I put HPS on my 94 this spring. I love the difference. The dusting is pretty average, but the stopping is great. I used them on my 98 Trans Am too.
I don't remember the exact fit. It was a pretty easy swap though.

Better hardware will make a difference (e. g. Calipers/Rotors) but pads are pads......they ware out and you through them out......For $20 I don't feel anything but my back ache while I change them.
