EGR Replacement and Clean $450.00?
Is this a fair price to have the EGR valve replaced the supporting parts(?)
cleaned?
I had the SES light and took it to the dealer who said the EGR needed to
be replaced and they would clean up the rest of the parts that caused
the problem fro $450.00.
How hard is it to replace the EGR and how do I reset the SES light in the DIC?

I have an LT1 but I don't believe there is much difference. From just looking at it, it doesn't look too difficult to me to remove and replace...just two bolts on the back of the manifold and it should come right off. As far as cleaning related parts...what parts. I guess maybe the exhaust passage in the manifold, but you could only do so much and that ain't much (unless they plan to remove and clean the entire manifold). The only other related part is the EGR solenoid. I'm going to just replace both of mine. The EGR is about $60, I don't know how much the solenoid is but I'm betting not alot.
$450 seems pretty steep to me. If you subtract $100 for parts, they're still getting $350 for labor...at $80/hr, that 4 hrs plus. I don't think so!!!

The more I think about this, I agree, I think I'll replace the EGR myself.
Will the SES light on the DIC reset automatically after the valve is
changed?

heres the trick: if the SES comes on at startup (meaning it failed the selftest), then the problem is electronic, EGR solinoid, in nature (could be a bad valve, too. I would replace anyway). if the SES comes on after a bit of driving, then it is the EGR valve itself.
$450.00 for that service is a total rip... the part is not very expensive... you can call carfan18(Jeff Kopp) at 1-800-728-8267 and he can fix you up... tell him I sent ya!

The only thing you can do with the manifold still on the car is get a wire wheel on a drill and pass in into the port (hole) and vacumm it out.

Its a very easy procedure, just do it your self. Have a can of Carb/TB cleaner around when you do it and clean the area around the EGR itself inside the manifold. Not a big deal. You will save yourself a ton of $$$$.
The SES light will go out once the problem is solved.

I replaced the EGR valve myself on my L98. Not too bad of a project really. Just some stuff to disconnect, a few bolts, some time spent cleaning and tinkering around with stuff. Can't say what's involved with a 96 though. You can probably do it yourself for a heck of a lot less though if you're at all mechanically inclined. :D

Don't let anyone touch your car unless they are rebuilding the entire engine or transmission.. that's my theory. (oh, or rebuilding a differential.. that has to be very precise).

I wasn't able to get the parts wholesale, but was able to get them
at the local dealer. The job will end up costing me $105.00 and about
an hour of my time. I removed the fuel rail covers and took a look.
After I saw what was involved, I'm still wondering what I would have
gotten for $450.00 -- Yeah, I know what I would have gotten --
Thanks for all the advice.

I purchase my parts at -40% of dealers list from guys like Jeff here on the list(plus no sales tax). Takes 3-5 days to receive the parts, I just have to plan ahead. BTW, usually the dealer makes me wait 2-3 days and pay full price, with sales tax, up front.
