Resetting the security system after it sounds off
I have a stock 84 which has a security feature and occasionally it triggers and the horn beeps and it disables the ignition so the car won't start.
How do I turn it off and reset it after it goes off? I have been disconnecting the battery cable each time to shutdown the sytem (pain). There has to be another way, and the Chevy dealer does not even know. Super secret stuff I suppose.
thanks
joe

I'm not sure if the 84 is the same as my 96, but here goes...
The VATS system on the early C4s had an extremely tight tolerance (resistance). The slightest bit of dust or even oil from your fingers would make the VATS read incorrectly which would shut down the ignition system. (The car thinks it's being stolen or tampered with) They increased the tolerance in the late models to help cure this problem.
The next time it happens, try this. Get out of the car, lock the door with the key, then wait about 5 minutes...try to start it again. Hope that helps.

Actually VATS is completely separate from the factory alarm system.
I have to unlock the door from the outside to turn my alarm off. Actually I have to run around to the passenger side because the driver's side door lock does not turn off the alarm. I think there's probably some corroded electrical contacts there. Anyway the only way to turn off the factory alarm is to unlock the door from the outside. Make sure you turn the key as far as you can.

On my '92, all I have to do to shut off the alarm is lock and unlock the door using the key.

You can do what the moron did who owned my car previously - disconnect the horn!
Anyway, I could NOT figure out what the clicking was when I entered my car - it was the alarm/horn relay going off.
By the way, I put in a remote entry/alarm system and connected one of the alarm contacts to the door lock wires. Works like a charm

How do I turn it off and reset it after it goes off?
After my darling :( daughter climbed up the wheel / tire / across the decklid and into the parked car and unlocked the door to get out, she of course set off the alarms. Scared the living crap out of herself. :jester She'll never do that again.
Oh, yeah, your question. I just turned the key in the door lock (unlock direction) to deactivate it. You use the power lock button to activate it. If you lock the door with the key, it won't alarm the car. At least this is how it worked on a 1987 vette.
