Default 700R4 vs. 4L60 (non-electronic)

Hello. I usually post over @ the C3 area, but figured you C4 guys (and gals) would have more/better info...

How do the 700R4 and 4L60 differ? I understand that the 4L60 is stronger, but others say it's identicle (only renamed). What years did the Vette come w/ the 4L60 (non-electronic)?

I appreciate the info :D

I'm pretty sure there is no such thing has a 4L60, and that any transmission that does not rely on electronic control that looks like a 700R4, is a 700R4. Just my humble opinion. :)

A 700R4 is a 4L60 and was used from 82 to 93 then they went to a 4L60E which is an electric shift 700R4.

There IS a designation of 4L60. It is a later used name for the 700R4. The 700R4 and the 4L60 are the SAMETHING. You say potato , I say potahto. The 4L60E is the later electronic version.

BINGO! the 700R4 is the same thing as the 4L60. Its just a later designation. In 1994 they came out with the 4L60E which is electronically controlled. Hence (E)

And they are both rather weak transmissions. Won't hold up to a lot of horsepower. That's from my experience anyway.

I don't know if anyone on the Corvette Forum has done it, but I understand that the 4L60E when the engine has been modified quite a bit likes to have the PWM replaced with a more conventional vacumn modulator. Not on a stock or near stock engine, but one that is clearly operating outside the computer's parameters. Just a thought, I have no experience with this mod.

OK, what about a 4L80E? Is it significantly stronger? And will it fit where a 4L 60E fits? Fit without modifying anything?

I think you can put a 4l80e in a c4. There is somebody either doing that right now or he has done it. I saw a picture around here somewhere of how he made a custom bracket on the tailshaft of the trans to bolt the torque arm to. I just tried searching around a bit for it and can't seem to find it. It looked cool tho. The 4l80e is much stronger than the 700/4l60e. Besides fabbing up the bracket you need some sort of other computer to control it because it needs electronic controls for shifting.

The 700R4, 4L60, and 4L60E, are basically an over drive version of the TH350. The 4L80E is the over drive equivalent of the TH400. The 4L80E was never made in a non-"E" configuration. The differences between the "60" series and the "80" series are very similar to the differences in the TH350 and the TH400. The 80 is bigger, longer, and heavier. Transmission tunnel clearence MAY be an issue in some applications. Jet Performance and others are providing transmissions with electronics for coversions. They are a beefy trans, but they ain't cheap.

Being someone who used to rebuild all of the above...I wouldn't say that.
NONE of the parts from a TH350/400 can be used in ANY 700R4/4L60/80/E model. They are TOTALLY different beasts.

93 was the transition year. Early 93s had 700R4 while late 93s had the 4L60E

I have a 92...It has a 4L60, I don't know when they started call them 4L60 instead of 700R4, but it was a least 92 :)

The change in name from 700r4 to 4L60 was caused because of an attempt to standardize the naming/rating of transmissons in the auto industry.
