Default Rear wheel bearings

Put new rear tires on an when I had the rear wheel off found some play in the bearing.Found that the axle nut was loose.Tightened it up but still have some play.I have no bearing noise.1 what is the axle bearing nut torque.2 is any play exceptable.1986 coupe

Default Bearings

According to Van Steel corvette the rear wheel bearing need to be torqued when the car is on the ground to 167 ft lbs.

Street car - a little play is ok, check the FSM
AutoX, Road Race, Drag Race = NO play at all.

Post above has the torque spec I used when replacing mine last year. It was in the FSM

I think the loose axle nut is a bad sign. I found very loose axle nuts(hand tight) on mine when I changed rear bearings, the nuts were loose because the bearing housing had disintegrated, the bearings fell apart when I removed them. Keep a close eye on it.

If it is time for rear bearings its hard to beat this price on OE GM bearings. WW
