Default Oil filter and oil cooler

Ok question guys. My 89 vette has a factory oil cooler. This is between the oil filter and the engine where the filter would connect if there was no oil cooler. Should there be a gasket between the oil cooler and the engine? I didnt see one when I took the filter off? When I pulled the oil filter off the 4" or so shaft came off with the filter. Also between the oil cooler and the block I found a small ring stitting loose on top of the oil cooler? Wonder where that came from?

the ring seals the cooler to block...I removed mine; its more of a coolant warmer than an oil cooler. If you run synthetic, its not even needed. They eliminated the coolers from the LTx's because they came with synth from the factory.

This was a small metal ring about a inch round. it looks like the ring connector that attaches a piston to the wrist pin. it was just sitting loose between the oil cooler and block. its too big to come through any of the tubes. So the oil cooler dont need a gasket?

No idea what/where that came from...and yes, there is a gasket or o-ring between the block and the cooler

That is the circlip that stops the free turning threaded center tube from falling out of the cooler.Fits in the groove of the tube
