Default How wide are 315/35 17

I am considering buying a set of vehicle positioning jacks. These jacks, jack the car up by the tire. The jacks will work on a tire having a maximum width of 12". How wide are these rear tires. I can't measure mine because I don't have them yet.

Thanks,

Harry

My nitto 555r's are 12" wide but not all 315s are the same.

It all depends on the brand. The Goodyear GSD3 is about 12.5", the Sumitomos were about 11", and everything else in between.

ya, 315's are not all created equal. Actual tread width varies between brands, typically between 11 and 12.5.

You'll hear alot of talk about Sumitomo's being a little "narrow"....they are indeed actually 1.5" narrower than a Goodyear of the same "size".

I agree with what everyone else has to say. The sum's, nitto drag radials, and firestone all appear to look rather narrow for a 315. However the BFG's, and Goodyears look right at home, and give it that wide stance that it needs. Nothing like a C4 with some 315's(335's) and some pwr under the hood.

two widths are published and determined by the manufacturer. there is thread width and section width. not all 315's have the same tread and section width - it depends where on the tread the manufacturer takes their measurements, and the profile of the tire. you can go to the tire rack for a particular tire and go the the specs for the dimensions - but it's still not an apples to apples measurement...

mathematically, 315mm/25.4 = 12.40 in. but a GY F1 GS-D3 has a published section width of 12.3 in. and a thread width of 11.2 in. the same Kumho 315-35R17 has a published section width of 12.6 in. and a thread width of 11.5 in. variations in section width also effect the overall diameter of the tire.

i don't think there is universal standard when it comes to tire tread measurements...

I used to have those giant 315/35ZR-17s on my '87 back in the 90s. It had 17x9.5" wheels all the way around. They looked good no doubt but the handling suffered - a lot. The tires were just too wide for the rims - probably needs at least an 11" rim. Looking forward to your pics!
