Grand Sport Brake Rotors
I have a '90 roadster and a while back, I put grand sport calipers on the front. Since then I have had a clunking sound when I apply the brakes. The brakes work fine. I finally got around to checking the clunking sound today. Everything looks ok and tight. Except for the calipiers - there is slight movement and seems to be the cause of the clunking noise. I am thinking that maybe the brake rotors for the grand sport are a little thicker than the base suspension - anyone know the thickness of the base rotors and the grand sport rotors? thanks,Tom

I know you are talking abouit a 'clunk' which is different, but read about my experience.
Back when I first got my car ('93), it felt like it had warped rotors. A gradual stop from 65 MPH would cause a pulsing sensation. I looked at the pads and they seemed 'loose' like they were a little bit too small for the slots in the caliper. You could wiggle the pad front-to-rear against the caliper. I replaced them and the vibration went away.
A few years later, I put grandsport calipers (and 13" rotors) on my corvette. Never any issues with clunks or anything like that.

thanks for sharing your experiences. I do not get the pulsing that you got. My caliper actually moves a little when I grap it and try to move it. I will look for movement in the pads. I have the 13" rotors - I am just thinking maybe they are not thick enough. It is like the calipers do not hold the pads to the rotor. There should always be some resistance - I need to check to see if that resistance is there. thanks again. Tom

The Grand Sport used the same rotors as all other '96 Corvettes.
Yes, the calipers were slightly different, but they used the same 13" rotors as other J55 brakes.

Do you have anti-rattle clips for the brake pads?n Thats probably your problem if you hear a slap or clunk when you apply the brakes...I have the HD brakes on my 96 and they need antirattle clips to prevent this noise...

My 95 had same noise I have j55 13" rotors. you might need the anti rattle clips, Pepboys have them for about $10 and its part of "brake hardware kit" it is the silver clip on bottom center of caliper[IMG][/IMG]

Bacord! You may be a genius. I have the anti rattle clips but could not figure out how to install them. A buddy of mine who is a Corvette mechanic told me this was probably the problem but I understood him to call them wear indicator clips. I just could not believe this was the problem, After your post and picture - I believe! I will put them in tomorrrow and let you guys know. thanks, Tom

glad I could help, the wear indicator clips on mine are on top of the pad and were riveted in place. Amasing how much noise the brakes can make. I had to go to 3 auto parts stores to find out their part of "brake hardware kit" Now that I look at the picture I need to clean my calipers lol...

Grand Sport Brake Problem Solved
Well today I used everyone's advice and fixed the clunking and rattling in my front brakess.
Key Points:
Pin goes on the bottom of the mounting bracket.
C4 brake caliper pivot point for pad removal is the bottom
C4 brake pads with the hole in the ear go up and go in the bracket first
then push the caliper down and in - this is the only way it will go in.
Then put the pin in - may help to have someone put the pin in as you push down and in on the lower part of the caliper.
This solved the clunking and rattling noise coming from the front brakes.
thanks for your advice. Tom's '07 Monty
