Getting my pre-cats removed today
I've had a local muffler shop remove the pre-cats today. They are making a rattling sound an the seams were leaking. I pick it up at lunch, I'm very curious about the sound and any power feel. The rest of the exhaust is stock, including the main cat and mufflers. I'll post any results, good or bad.

I had that done last week. The main cat was plugged up as well. It came back significantly louder with some low rpm resonance. I am considering replacing the mufflers with stock to soften it up....

Muffler shop was brave to do this. They can be fined big time for removing cats in this manner.
:D Removing the pre-cats won't get you much at all unless they were really clogged. Normally teh pre-cats break up, not clogged.

Well, I picked it up, no resonance that I can tell so far, just slightly louder. I kept the main cat. The rpm's seem to rev up quicker, and it sounds like it has more power. I'm very pleased with the results and best of all the ting is gone.
As far as the removal, It's the shop I take everything to, they know me and I know you've heard this before: It's not always what you know, but who you know.
Thanks to all for the advise.

Sounds like you got some restriction taken away ... way to go!  I just gutted mine a week ago (normal cats .. LT1), and I can smell a difference ... hear a difference, and feel a difference. My driver's side cat was melting and clogging, so gutting it maked it flow MUCH more free. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

It only cost me $100 to have it done so I had them removed from my stock pipes. If I had to have an inspection and wanted it done, I'd just get one from MAD or etc... that doesn't have them, then if you fail you could always swap them back on for a day or two.

um....why would you fail????? i live in MA too (western ma).....i goto a good inspection place.....not really anybody i know...but they are nice....
Never once have they looked under the car to see if the pre-cats are there.....so as long as you pass the tests...you are fine....and from what I have heard.....(scorp included and gave me these ideas)....just make sure your car is hot....and run a can of octane booster in it or Sonoco94.....and you should pass fine....hope it goes well...let us know.
