If I remember correctly, mine would run rough cold and then once it warmed up it really started to act up, the car wouldn't idol, had difficulty starting, skipped, sputtered, and backfired a few times.
At the time this was right after a radiator hose burst so it was pretty obvious what happened.
If you replace it, throw in a new water pump while your at it.
