I need help with crankshaft pulley LT1
Ok this job sucks so far.I am down to the crankshaft pulley and can't get it off.
I removed the 3 bolts, hit it with a dead blow from the top,got under the car and hit it from the bottom side using an extension. This thing will not budge.
How do you guys get them off??????????
The FSM says you need a puller but I see where others say you don't.
I dont see how I could get a puller in there.
All this just to replace the W/P and Opti seals because of a oil leak.
This really sucks bad why did they design this like this.Stuff like this makes me want to sell the car, everything is so tight. It was all I could do to get to the short bolt for the W/P on the drivers side thanks to the power steering pulley and that hose running in front of the bolt.

So do you hit on the inside or around the outside???
Did you rotate the engine when doing this??
Next question will it go on easy or will it be a pain in the but to get on to
Thanks to all of you, your great help

Soak it with PB Blaster, get under the car and tap it forward on the inner part of the ring. It will help to rotate the engine after a few taps.
Clean off the rust, rub on a little antiseize, and the pulley will slide back on without any issues.

Thanks guys I will get some PB blaster and a broomstick.
I will spray it on tomorrow after work and let it soak till tuesday.
Is the pulley keyed to the hub or caould it be spun to help get it off?
will it go on anyway or just one way?
by the way the FSM sucks for this no info. You guys are better than the FSM any day

Ok I was reading not to use a puller that pulls from the outside or it culd damage the dampner.
I was hitting the outside edges with a long 24 " socket and a hemmer.
How can I check for damage that is not visual if I ever get this thing off.
A new balancer?pulley is 65 bucks at rock auto

Use a hand-held torch & heat up center of pulley & it will come off much much easier.Don't get it glowing or too hot.I hate seeing someone hammering on an engine-its not good on the thrust bearings.Heat does wondersHammer is not the correct wayIf its not coming loose using a hammer is not a professional way & you can bend or damage things.Almost all cars nowadays are hard to work on.On the Lamborghini forums they have to pull the engine out to do almost anything to the engine.Enjoy the struggle, you'll learn alot & you cannot put a price on experience, plus you'll feel better knowing you done it yourselfLike you previously stated soak in pentrating oil let it sit then use the torch & it will come off, step away from the hammer & rent a puller or buy one.Keep us posted

I was thinking of making a puller but I dont know the bolt circle of the pulley.
Using a threaded rod between the frame and the pulley center nut, then usung another nut and plate with bolts to pull it off.
Or is there a puller I can buy to get in there without jacking up the engine ????

Not to hijack this thread too bad, but once the 3 bolts are out and the pulley is lodged loose from the crank, can the pulley come completely off, or are you limited to only having it loose so you can gain enough access for the opti/water pump replacement?
the reason i ask is i am planning on putting a crank udp on my '94 and wondering if i'll have the clearance to fully remove the old pulley without removing the crank center bolt/hub

When I pulled mine off it was rusted on the hub.
I had a helper under the car and this is how we did it:
Block of wood UNDER the car and against the damper
Whack it with a hammer 2 -3 times
Rotate engine 1/2 turn
Whack it
Rotate
whack it
Took about 2 1/2 revolutions and it went "ping"
Cleaned the hub and inner part of the damper, used anti-sieze when putting it back together.

Its your car but I will not take a hammer to my corvette. My other sure but not my baby. There is a special puller that someone here can link. This is my opinion.Do it right & buy the puller. That way you can have it for other jobs & do the job correctly.Plus I can borrow it from you or buy it from you when I have to remove mineHitting it with a hammer can & might work but its not good on the thrust & main bearing.

I have uses PB blaster/heat and a hammer so far.I am going to be looking into a puller now but I don't want to lift the engine to do it.
I think I can get a puller in from the front if I drop the sway bar.
Hey everyone what aligns the pulley to the hub?????Is there pins on there??? or is it just the OD of the threaded bolts once you get all the rust off?
