Default Steering Wheel

Hello, Maybe some of you guys can help me out with this question.
Can you put an aftermarket steering wheel on a 87 Vette? It does have a teliscopic steering colum in it. Will i have problems finding a steering wheel kit (like for grant steering wheels)..

Thanks

I used a Momo unit with adapter on my 89.
I think my Momo parts are in the attic.

Yes the grant kits will work fine.

I have a "Type R" aftermarket steering wheel on my 87. Not sure what it is other than Type R sounds like a Honda. It is silver, small diameter and looks cool. Unfortunately I now don't have a horn as the wiring for the aftermarket steering wheels horn is not in place.

Not even a decent picture but gives you an idea of a Grant wheel. After the second knee replacement I did the "D" wheel hoping to get some get-in-and-out room. It works. The adapter came from Grant but is stamped MOMO. The ECM? I had just upgraded from the 870 to a 165 ECM and was still playing with chips.

I have a Momo 330mm suede D wheel on mine, this is a great wheel and the suede has a good grip, the flat bottom makes it much easier to get in and out, no need to adjust the wheel up and down.
The 'momo' hub was a different matter tho, tried 2 and neither fit, took the hub to an engineer friend who made up plastic plugs, the momo inside was too small, he modified it to fit but disagreed with the 'genuine momo, made in italy' on the box, saying it was probably made in india or similiar with poor quality control.
I got the horn to work no worries, but couldnt use the tele without another mod to the hub so i just locked it in a good spot for me.

How did you get it to work? Mine doesn't have a wire from the horn button to ground and the boss is not earthed.

Hi Lemme, do you have the big spring that goes behind the steering wheel on ?
there is only 1 wire on the horn button.
also check the little spring loaded button thing that seats in the boss that is attached to that wire, sometimes it can slide back and not contact.

Big spring is behind the boss but is insulated from the boss. The horn button is plastic and has 2 terminals (provision for 2 wires) but also makes a ground through the button clip when pressed.

here is a photo of the diagram from FSM, i hope its ok,
the big spring sits behind the wheel and drops into the groove (that you can see on your photo of your boss)
Im no auto electrician but i do know that the horn wouldnt work without that spring there,
do you have the original spring ?
if not, maybe someone can chime in with another fix ?

Thanks. I do have an FSM but hadn't spotted that diagram.

On my steering wheel the big spring sits behind the boss and is insulated. The original horn appears to work by grounding the horn against a ground (steering wheel metal?). My aftermarket horn button also works that way. Somehow I have to get a ground to the horn button. The centre bolt and the boss outer race are both insulated from ground at present.

Maybe. At least my example shows probably what not to do with an aftermarket steering wheel.
