Exhaust clamp Help
Well, I took my flowmaster cat back off and put a factory LT1 exhaust back on. Why, because I like to have my wife and kids ride with me, yet it was just too loud.
It was a Long Tube header exhaust with no cats, Sorry Andy.
Now I have a slight exhaust leak where the extension tube from the passenger side header is to the cat back section. Where the extension tube goes into the cat back is 2 1/2 inch ID to the factory cat back, whic had a 2 3/4 inch ID clamp on it. That clamp didnt work. So, I put a band clamp on it and it just didnt tighten down enough.
Apparently I need a lap joint clamp which allows you to clamp where a pipe goes into another.
My ultimate question is, what siz lap joint clamp do I get?
Do I get 2 1/2 or 2 3/4. I am thinking 2 1/2 inch, as that is the smaller of the pipes.
Also, these Walker clamps come with a puddy type goop that goes where the clamp joins, to assist in sealing, which mine didnt have either.

Find this exaughst pipe flange and joint sealer- "Acoustic Seal" from your local NAPA parts store.
I use if very often at work. I am an automechanic.
Have used it for about 20 years now. good stuff. but very messy.
Wear disposable gloves.
Get it on your skin and you will have a hard time washing it off.
Get it on your clothes and it is there to stay for good. lol
Will get the job done for you, no more exh. leaks and ticks.

Had an old time mechanic turn me on to "Acoustic Seal" many years ago in a GM dealership I once worked at.
Its made by Tennco company I believe.
And sold under the "WALKER" brand name. "Acoustic seal is the product name.
Just bought 2 tubes this past Monday at work.
Called our local Napa store and said "send me 2 tubes of "Acoustic Seal" please......
Live by Peoria, IL. Central IL.
One tube of "Acoustic Seal went on our parts and chemical shelf at work.
The 2nd tube of Acoustic Seal went into my Snap on Tool box.
LOL. I was out.
Its a must have at work on cars on trucks we repair daily.
Just like brakecleaner and Permatex Ultra Grey Silicone RTV Sealer.

most of them just call it muffler mud or paste, some call it exhuast seal, its all pretty much the same product, the bad part about it is if you decide to get it welded up it needs to be completely cleaned off. used to do custom work years ago, if you start on clean metal and turn the heat up , you can burn thru it but it makes a messy weld and you have to make a few extra passes to clean it up.

Its similar to thinned down roofing tar sealer you buy in 5 gallon steel pail containers that you use to patch your house and garage roof in the springtime.
Why I said that it is very messy if you get it on your hands and skin.
I use it on every flanged bell exuaghst connection on daily driver cars and trucks. Never any leaks or ticking noises afterwards.
Just a light thin coat of the stuff is all that is needed.
On race cars I dont use any sealer. All surfaces are flat and true. They are machined flat. Or I MIG Weld them together.
Its personal pride, and some cars I have worked on exceed $100K in value. They would have a coniption fit If they seen that sealer by there primary header flanges............ lol

Well, here is my little exhaust leak. Basically the extension pipe going into the cat back isnt sealing very well. The clamp helps a significant amount, but on the bottom, you can feel puffs of air coming out during engine running. I plan on using the acousti seal under the clamp till I can get it done right later.
Brian, do you think the acousti seal will seal this up if I remove the clamp, apply the goopy stuff then tighten it down, wait 24 hrs for cure?

Trying to use "Acoustic Seal" underneath that Walker style Band Clamp.
Apply as little as needed. Otherwise you will get that stuff all over you when you re-tighten that clamp over both Ex pipes.
Dont wait 24 hours for the Acoustic Seal to cure.
Start Your Corvette immediately after you tighten the clamp.
It only cures with exaughst heat from a running engine.
Open the garage door. It will get stinky............ the sealer releases pretty putrid fumes. Not the toxic kind of smell, but very stinky. LOL
But as soon as you start you Vette, all exaughst leakage should be non existant NOW.
The sealer should quit releasing fumes within the 1st half hour of driving your car.
Usually after using Acoustic Seal on a Customers car, I take a test drive for 20 - 30 minutes. let the stuff cure out from Ex heat and let all the fumes from it curing go away.

Then it bakes and dries up. How hard ?
Not sure. But its not like muffler cements you can buy too.
It works very good for sealing up small joints and flanges up to 1/16" to maybe 1/8".
Should work just fine for what you are sealing up on your Corvette Exhaust.

Thanks again Brian. I just finished it. I put a slight bead around the pipe, tapped it in, then install the clamp. It definitely stinks like asphalt and ooozed out a little.
I used a Walker Mega clamp 33227, significantly better design and clamped much better than other lap joint clamps I used. It doesnt use nuts, the bolts tighten via the clamps other latch. It fit much much better. You can see a portion of the old clamp which has a bar in between the clamp. It isnt very good. The walker I used is the one I will use from now on.
