Default Coolant temp sensor - LT1

Can the sensor be removed without draining the coolant?

It was suggested by someone to remove the radiator cap and squeeze the top radiator hose, then replace the cap. Basically create a small vacuum so when the sensor is pulled and replaced quickly no coolant will spill.

is this true? thanks in advance

If the car is absolutely cooled off and there is no pressure in the system, leave the cap on and quickly reinsert the new sensor once you remove the old one. You should only loose a little coolant depending how fast you are.

Also be sure you're replacing the right sensor. The sensor that drives the ECM and the digital gauge is in on the water pump housing. The sensor that drives the analog gauge is in the cylinder head.

Whoa, didn't know that. Is there a way to tell visually? I picked up a sensor from the auto parts store and specifically told the guy it was in the passenger cylinder head. He claimed that this was the correct one. Hoping so.

I'm pretty sure they have different plugs. Check the fit first. On the link the first pic is the one between 6 & 8. And the lower pic is of the one on the water pump.
