I have a 92 m6 steering column that needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Does anyone have a source for rebuilt or rebuilding?

i bought NOS housings (upper and lower since I didnt know which ones I needed) parts from a business called 'corvette steering'.

Apparently the owner bought out all of the gm dealers NOS steering parts so he is your only source.

be sure you dont lose the copper horn contacts (about the size of a postage stamp) if you do this job yourself they are easily lost.

I plan on doing this job when I put the car down for the winter.

Also my horn has stopped working too and I will fix that then too.


I dont know of any businesses that rebuild corvette steering columns. Maybe its the same as other gm steering columns?

The column or the rack?

The column you can rebuild yourself (or your mechanic can do it).
Procedure is here - do a search for column repair. IIRC its a plastic piece that brakes and needs replaced and the column is stiff again.

For the rack - Not too many folks have been happy with auto parts store rebuilds. I'm going to send mine out to Turn one this winter since I probably won't see a race track until late June next year

The column, it moves down and to the left when you move the wheel. Its from people using the wheel to lift themselves out of the seat.
I did find a company that rebuilds with exchange for $600.
I haven't got a clear idea of what fails or wears when this happens.
Doing it myself isn't a problem if the parts are available.

I created a thread on this exact same problem - but short story your tilt steering housings are worn. Corvettesteerring is one place where you can get new housings that arent worn out.

You did a great job, with pictures and the writeup. The common cause of this slop in the column appears to be the steel pivot pins wearing the holes in the housing. Does the complete column need to be remove to replace the housing and pins?

Replacing just the the upper-tilt housing can be done with the column in the car, but to replace both the upper and lower housings, then the column will need to come out. The steering shaft has to be removed in order to remove the lower housing.

Removing the entire column is fairly straight forward, easier to do than it sounds.

Sorry to revive an old thread but figured better than starting a new one. Is there a company out there that rebuilds these or will the dealer do it?

Has anyone paid a dealer to fix it? Curious to see what the charge was.

I fixed mine with just the pin from Haibeck. It worked awesomely. Install was cake until it was time to put the little cover back on and the lever doohicky for the headlight dimmer. What a pain in the nuts. Spent more time on that than the rest of the install combined.
