Default why multiple coolant sensors on L83 engine?

So my 84 has a thermal switch between #6 and #8 plug, but it looks like it's broken or about to break...came off really easy.

But it also has a thermal switch between #1 and #3 plugs.

I have seen conflicting information on where it is supposed to be, but since I only have 1 fan, which one is correct? Does it really matter? I would prefer to disconnect the one on the passanger side and just use the one between #1 and #3 as its easier for me to get to.

With only 1 fan, that isn't controlled by the ECM, does it matter?

It shouldn't have the same type of connector, the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the knock sensor connector may be close but I could be wrong.
I'm not looking at my FSM to give you accurate information on the sensor your asking about but if I were to make a guess I would say that sensor is monitoring temp or pressure to engage the clutch on the A/C compressor.

Best investment you could ever make is a FSM from Helms

I have one, but can only find reference to it in the engine electrical section. It shows the one between 1 and 3. I don't know where the other one is, but I'll trace the wiring diagram tomorrow.

There is a fan switch on the '84 Compressor. Maybe these will help. They are from your 1984 manual:

That should help him Ray..

The electrical section of the FSM is actually a seperate book, about 100 pages or so.

Thanks, I hadn't made it to section 8 yet.

The connector I was talking about is the one labeled as engine cooling fan switch connector in 8a119.

You need a fan running when the a/c is on because what's in the Condenser has to be cooled/maintained at around 100 degrees or 200 psi. Your system relies on a high pressure switch mounted in the Compressor outlet which is spliced into the Fan Relay Circuit. That sensor closes with head pressure and that cranks on the Fan. If it doesn't turn it on, it will blow a hole in something if the High Pressure Limit fails - also mounted on the Compressor.
