'85 vs. '86 cluster tach signal? Pretty please before I go nuckin Futz
I have to have the worst luck in the world. I'll be brief, but I had my cluster rebuilt. The 1 yr warranty expired and I never really drove the car because I was restoring it.
The Speedometer didn't work, (I've posted about this before) so after running every test I could, I sent it back to be looked at. He said the main board was no good, and he had never seen that happen before. Thast I must have had a voltage spike or something. So after an additional $225. he had to change out the main board, but only had on from a 1985. So I figured "what do I care". He said he had to put a matching tach cluster in it (he exchanged it at no charge).
I get the thing back, (the Speedo works now, by the way) and the tach gives a double digit report up till 1000 rpms. So if you were at 900 rpms it says 90 on the tach. Then when it hits 1000 rpms it says 10 like its supposed to.
So the question is: what is the difference in the way the tach works on a 1985 cluster and a 1986 to make it do that? Can I change the tach signal to fix it instead of sending it back again?

On my '85 the multiplier reading changes as well. When its less than 1000 rpm it will show X10 and when above it displays X100. I dont know about the '86.

I looked at a few '85s on you tube, and it appears that they do go double digits berfore 1000 rpms. I thought I was going crazy, because I've had problems with the cluster of the car from day one.
As long as I know it's working properly, I can live with it.
Come to think of it, it's probably more accurate that way. The '86 cluster just said 7....then 8.....then 9....and then 10.
Thanks much!
