Default 1993 Intermittent LCD Failure - SYS Flashing

Hello everyone,

I have a 1993 40th Anniversary Convertible that I purchased about a month ago.

I'm having a problem with the LCD Display in the Instrument Cluster. It has worked flawlessly for the first 3 weeks or so, but recently the LCD has gone completely blank on me. The orange backlight always stays ON, only the digits disappear.

Once, the LCD flashed off, and then came back on with ALL of the LCD segments lit (numbers read 88888, for example), and stayed like this until it went off again.

The second time it flashed off, it came back on with the correct LCD display, but the SYS light was flashing.

I understand the SYS indicator is for the Central Control Module, which controls the LCD display. I'm thinking maybe there's a loose wire or a bad solder joint in the cluster.

Anyone ever had this problem or know where to start looking?

Thanks,
Nick

Default sys flashing

I had a similar problem last fall on my 95. sys would come on intermittently. I started to notice that the car was week staring, so I ended replacing the battery after numerous attempts to charge . Ended up replacing the battery. It was five years old. I have not had the sys show up since replacing the battery. This worked for me. Good luck. brent317

No, stock Delco Bose Gold Radio.

I can understand the SYS issue with low battery voltage, but I'm loosing all segments of the LCD panel as well, and then it's displaying them all... It seems the SYS light is a secondary issue, although it never came on before the LCD first blacked out.

Right now, the LCD has been blank and remained that way for the past week, so I cannot enter the CCM's Diagnostic Mode to retrieve trouble codes.

Well I had my mechanic take a look at the car and he diagnosed the problem as a failed LCD in the cluster.

He'll be getting a rebuilt cluster in from a Californian company in a couple days.

I'll check to see if the SYS light flashes after the new cluster is in. If so, I'll know to replace the battery.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks

I had a white '93 Non-Anniversary Coupe about 5 years ago, which was loaded aside from the sport seats and TPMS... (And a '78 Silver Anniversary, but didn't keep it long)

Now I have this Anniversary Edition Convertible, which is fully loaded aside from the dealer-installed luggage rack.
