Default Anyone rebuild the Rack and Pinion on a C4?

The Rack and Pinion on my 89 is leaking and has ever since I bought it, but now its getting worse. I looked and found a reman (with limited lifetime warranty) complete Rack and Pinion for $159.99 and I was just thinking about getting it.

However, I noticed that there is a reseal kit for the Rack and Pinion for only $39.99. I don't have a fear of getting my hands dirty and I have a nicely equipped garage to work in. But I have never worked on a R&P so I don't know what all is involved. If it's going to take me 12 hours to rebuild it, I might as well buy the reman. I also don't know if it needs a press, which is one item I don't have in my garage.

Anyone done it, and have a web site on whats involved?

Turn One did mine and did a great job, but it's not cheap. The thing about mine was that it needed to be re-sleeved, a common issue with the early C4's, and that added to the cost. But because I heard a lot of horror stories here on the forum about getting rebuilt units from AA, AZ, and other places that did not work out, I decided to keep my original unit and have it built.

It's not a job you want to do again and again.

So far so good, and it's been about a year and a half. Dave

It's not worth the effort to rebuild it your self.
Here's an article showing Turn One rebuilding one.
I know the rubber boots alone sell for $12.00 each.

Default Mid-America

I bought one from Mid-America for my '86 over 10 years ago; had a local Goodyear dealer/garage install it and have never had a problem.

Another Turn One customer here. Had my rack rebuilt a couple of months ago. Replaced the pump and switched to Joe Gibbs PS fluid at the same time.

Very pleased with the result.

I bought and installed the $39 seal kit. Mine leaked as bad after the work i did as it did
before. It LOOKS easy, but i vote "don't do it".

Normally the "new" racks are just rebuilds themselves, probably by some kids in china. Then they spray some silver paint on it and send it to you. You then send your old rack back to them to get your core charge back. I went this route. The rack I got was slightly different than the original (tie rods were longer) The place I got it from insisted it was the right part and said that my "original" rack was probably replaced at some point. It wasn't. If I could do it over I would have sent the original to turn one and had them rebuild it the right way.

Mostly all of them are rebuilds even the ones from AZ and Or. The ones from O'Reilly Auto are remans costing around $155 and a rebuild from Turn One cost $200 after you pull it and ship it to them.

For me... I was under my car over the last couple days and I think that my Rack and Pinion is fine and it's the pump on the side of the block that is leaking. So it's going to be much cheaper for me this time.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that a new unit is available anymore. Apart from Turn One, or maybe a local shop, what you get from the retailers is a rebuilt unit. Dave

Talked to Turn One a little bit about the costs. If you are looking to keep the Vette around it's worth the cost. A little north of $500+ for the earlier racks needing a resleave, that's including the new lines provided by Classic Tube or similar vendors.

I wouldn't be against the O'Reily/Autozone core trade ins as I have read good comments in the mix with the bad. Not sure which route I will go. Turn One is run by people that know the racks used on C4s, so a rack done by them is a pretty safe bet and possibly better than new.
