where is the o2 senor in a 86
I was told I could gut the main cat because the o2 senor was in the pre-cats , but when I look under the car at the main converter I see a hose running to it and none going to the pre-cats does this mean the senor is in the main converter and not the pre-cats. thanks

The hose going to the main cat is an oxygen hose. The AIR system pumps oxygen into the cat to help continue the combustion as the gases exit the exhaust to clean up the emissions more.
The O2 sensor is located on the front y-pipe on the driver's side near the pre-cat. There is a single wire connected to it if you go looking for it.

Re: (scorp508)
thanks I want to gut the thing and get a couple extra free horsepower before going to the track tomorrow. I want to get in the low 14's which I think will be pretty good for being almost stock.
current mods. flowmaster cat-back, open air lid with k&n, 160 thermo stat. and maybe gutted converter

A gutted main cat gave me a huge gain when stock. If you can, try to find a peice of pipe that is juuuuust slightly smaller than the cat that you can slide through the convertor after you have gutted it. This will create a straight path for the exhaust gases to pass through instead of having an opportunity to rumble around inside the chamber in the convertor before exiting it.

I also had flowmasters when I did this. It gets louder, but definitely not obnoxious. You'll get a nice rumble at idle, and it'll be a nice throaty flowmaster scream over 3500. :)

Re: (scorp508)
Just got every thing back together. It sounds great, I haven't driven it yet so I don't know if there is any power increase. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. The hardest thing was getting the clamp off the air pipe and then putting it back on there, I spent half of the time just messing with that. I'm very pleased with my first do-it yourself mod :)
