stick vs auto rear end
Hi ,
I have an 85 that had a 4-3, but now has a richmond six speed, I understand that the stick shift cars come with a dana 44, and that auto cars came with a dana ,,is it 33?,,,, I have a 4.56 gear in my car now, and have found a vette rear end available, that appears to be a 3.23 and would rather have that gear. This is in what was once a stick shift 86 car, but I was told that the smallest numbered ratio in a stick car was 3.91. Can someone tell me about this, how can I tell a dana 44 from the lighter rear end since I dont want to put an auto rear gear, in a stick car. This is gonna cost me nine hundred twenty shipped, the original car had 86k on it, is this a reasonable price for a used dana 44? Ive seen other rebuilt ,,,,,new,,,, dana 44 s for about a thousand plus shipping with whatever gear I want in them. Does anyone here want to swap a 4.56 for a highway gear? I am in midmichigan if that helps.
Thanks TomSmith

Take a look at the thread below. It shows a sketch of the Dana 44 and Dana 36 that might help you identify it.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-t...6-or-44-a.html
The Dana 44 has used ratios less than 3.91. The '85 4+3 used a 3.07 and the 6 speed cars used a 3.45 (or 3.42) ratio. ( I get confused since the C4's used one and the C5's use the other)

Whoever gave you that info dosen't have a clue.
Correct info here:
http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c4/vader86/rearaxle.html
Orginal 4+3 cars have a D44 with 3.07 rear gear.
The steepest D44 factory gear ever offered was a 3.54 ratio (only in early 1989).... the rest of D44's from 1989 to 1996 either have a 3.33 (rare) or a 3.45 (most everything).
The factory NEVER offered a 3.91 or a 4.56 in the C4.....

The bigger Dana 44 has 2 bolts across the top of the gear cover.
The Dana 36 has 3.
The Dana 36 has 3.

Thanks a lot guys, youve really helped. I have to check now to be sure that I actually have a 4.56, since I only calculated that roughly, comparing it mph to mph plus rpm, to my z28 with lt one, six speed and 3.42 gear. I know my speedo in the c4 is off due to larger than standard rear tires, as compared to a gps, so other calcs will be needed.

If you figure out what you have for sure and not guessing, and it ends up being 4:10's ( which yes, would be aftermarket ) then I would be interested in trading you my 3:07 Dana44.
