4L60E 3rd gear reverts to 1st and 4th feels like 2nd
Ok, I deal mostly with diesel trucks so I see the bigger transmissions more then these smaller ones. The complaint is a sudden loss of 3rd and 4th one day while driving, no slipping or warning, just gone... The customer has already replaced every shift solenoid except the TCC before he brought it to me. Reverse is solid, 1st and 2nd gears can grab rubber, and when my Solus Pro says 3rd is commanded the transmission drops back (mechanically) to 1st gear, it feels like nuetral but if you get after it it will accelerate strong with no slip. Lift a little and 4th gear is commanded, at this point it feels as though the transmission goes back into 2nd... I don't have a motors manual or an ATSG guide for the 4L60Es, so I'm gonna reach out here and see what you fellas think.
Thanks,
Stan

I suppose I should mention that the car is a 1995, and that it did have a tree fall on it at one point in time and there is apparent damage to the brake booster (it's patched), so I'm not even 100% sure if the computer that mounts just above the booster is original...

...... Sounds like the 3-4 clutch pack is gone ... it is one of the weak links in the 700R4 / 4L60 / 4L60E transmissions ... once it slips , its toast .........

Thanks for the prompt reply, and P.S. I was married on Clearwater Beach three years ago (1/2/10) and used to live up in Brooksville when I was a kid... My dad owned a shop up there too - Diesel Tech, and we ran circle track cars at Inverness. Small world I guess lol

Yeah, I should have picked my old man's brain a little... He was a master tech for GM when the 700R4s came out and can build those in his sleep to this day I bet lol. I just wanted to be sure there were no electrical or VB demons in these 4L60Es since he started his shop in the mid 80s and never really saw any 4L60Es except the one that I rebuilt a long time ago for a guy. We just set all the clutch clearances for a 700 and the Trans Go kit showed the proper placement of the check *****. Worked great, was in a farm truck that's still used to this day so I must have done something right.
