The CEL in my 86 does not light either. Once, when I left the interior lights on and the battery was mostly dead, it lit. So I know it's not the bulb. As soon as the battery was back to full charge, no more light.

The SES light should come on when you turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
It is controlled directly by the ECM, so either the bulb is bad, the wiring is bad or the ECM is bad. There is a section in the shop manual on how to troubleshoot a "no SES light" problem.

I hesitate to look at it. Car runs great, plugs look like a textbook example of healthy plugs, I get 24 mpg or better on the highway, and nothing leaks.
