Default 1984 (4 sp w overdrive) radiator "hoses & thermostat"

Hello folks,

About to change out my upper / lower radiator hoses, as well as my thermostat.

The shop manual says factory recommends a 195* thermostat.

Also, I have the Doug Nash, (4sp+3 overdrive), which communicates with the ECM, to determine if the coolant is 180*+. then it will allow the overdrive to engage.

So, any preferences on the rad hoses, AC/Delco, Gates or others?

Any tips/caution when changing out the radiator hoses?

And what temp thermostat should I use, 160*, 180* or 195* (I live in Dallas, TX) ?

Also preferences on the thermostat MFG, Stant, Gates others?

In advance, thanks . . .

There is no interactive communication between the trans and the ECM
All the ECM does is operate a relay to turn on the O/d when certain parameters including correct engine temp are seen

On my 84 I used gates hoses, think Amazon had the best price on them. I installed a 180* thermostat and I also installed a 195/185 temp switch sender that replaces the stock one located between the #6 and 8 cylinder(pass side). The factory fan does not come on until around 228* or higher. My fan now comes on around 195-200 and off at around 183 or so. If your hoses are old be careful taking the hoses off the radiator necks as they are probably really stuck on there and if you try to twist them off you may crack them.

Be aware the the ECM looks for a temperature of 195 F and will pump more fuel. My hoses are Gates.
Stat 195F (Not one that has insert)
Serpentine Belt:: Buy a good one will last longer (?)
Don't forget heater hoses and throttle body hose
6 pack Bud

'84 doesn't have TB hoses.
