Default Another exhaust question

I know all these exhaust questions are getting old. Here is my problem, the po of my '93 removed the resonator and replaced with an x pipe and had some dynomax super turbo mufflers installed and the car is too quiet and drones bad. One of the mufflers let go and I am thinking about muffler elims but how much louder will the car be? I don't want obnoxious and the drone can't be any worse, can it? This would more or less be on until next tax return when I can get some corsa's

I would think the drone could get worse? I just installed Dynomax VT's and it sounds great with no drone! Take a listen on their website.

What is the part number of the muffler you put on yours?

Dynomax super turbos are a droney muffler. Try the elims...and drive it around the block. If too loud and drone-filled, have glass packs (resonators) installed. Or do it the first time.

Or do resonated tips.

Quit looking at the high-priced brand names. Those muffler "cans" cause drone. Corsa is shallow and "empty" enough to avoid the drone. They pitch the sound higher -- but so do glass packs. No muffler body raises the tuned pitch. That's how you get that raspy bark w/o the WAAAAAAAHHHHHH.

So the drone may be less? That would be great! Now if I could get my co worker to understand that back pressure isn't a good thing. He keeps saying "you get rid of mufflers and you will suck a valve"

Nice article, I will forward to him to read. How much louder is the car going to be is what I am worried about. My last car was a '86 corvette that had duals with no cats and flowmaster 40 mufflers, it was too loud for me. At first I thought it sounded great but after trying to live with it it became unbearable. I do not want this car sounding like that.

You don't have VT mufflers...they have an internal valve. You already said you have super turbos -- which isn't the same thing.

I was thinking the same. He said he had VTs and then posted a link to Super Turbos.

Well I stand corrected! I really thought they were VT's not Super Turbo's!

They sound 10 times better than the stock ones and I seriously don't notice any drone?

If you already have the resonator removed and straight oipes installed, you can try the chambered eliminators.
Here is a short vid of mine with both, chambered dual pipes and chambered eliminators. The sound is throaty but not obnoxiously loud for the neighbours. Hwy driving is fine and you can still use your phone or listen to music, but if you step on the gas, the nice V8 sound is there.
I have no drone in the car at any rpm.
The chambered eliminators will be the same or cheaper than catalogue eliminators if you get them from sweet thunder or Allen stainless exhaust.
Here you go.

Wow...your car really ISN'T loud. That proves the muffler is what's causing the drone. I'd also say the chambered eliminator video (above) shows clearly how mellow that option can be. With pre-cats (bullet cats) and glass packs (or chambered pipes), I think most people would be very happy with the result.

I think that particular tuning (w/o a muffler can being in the system) is the better way to go. I posted this recently in another thread. It's my conclusion after 6 iterations of exhaust on the C4. With that muffler "can", I think it eliminates the lower droney note. It can still growl, bark, and sound throaty...just in a slightly higher dynamic where the sound doesn't reverberate in the car.

FYI...chamber pipe really is very similar to resonators/glass packs. They all induce a section of pipe that's vented/baffled.

You cannot have a "loud car" and no drone

The Corsa can get louder behind the car under WOT but "bearable" in thats about it.
With a resonator it will be fairly quiet inside.

Corsas and the oval (not welded)Ultraflows can do this ie the higher pitch avoiding those low frequency humms that cause drone
