Where can I buy those small cans of R-12 freon. How much?
The A/C in my 86 needs to be recharged a bit. I don't want to convert to 134. I used to always recharge my cars myself with those small cans of R 12. Can I still get them and how much do theycost these days? Thanks!

This link will take you to the EPA site for auto techs. All of the info is there and it is the straight scoop, no BS.

R-12 here is $50/lb. I hear you can buy it from Mexico now online.
You could try to find someone who has stock piled some and buy it from them. Don't bother with ebay though, I tried to sell mine on there and it got pulled. I sold mine about 1.5 years ago. Too bad we didn't invest in it a few years before the ban. The stuff used to be less than 99 cents for 12 oz.

Re: (bogus)
With trade discounts and buying recycled, it is around $650 to $700 for a 30# tank. I prefer to do the R-134a switch anyway. The price can only go up.

I listen to the Pat Goss Show on saturdays, and he uses the R-406A at his shop. Says it is more compatable with a R-12 designed system then the R-134A is. I was wondering what your opinion was on the R-406A?

I don't have any experiance with anything beside R-134a. We have 6, 400 ton McQuay chillers that use R-134a (800# per machine) so I have a good supply. :yesnod:

When I first moved to Texas 15 years ago,
R-12 sold in auto parts stores for about
a dollar a can. $.83 on sale.
There's not a day goes by here in the land of the
all day blast furnace that I don't thank the
environmentalists for their "contributions" to
to our society.

You can still get R12 in the small cans. You have to have a license to buy it though. I have the license.

Just purchase some Freeze12. It is compatible with R-12. I used it on my car and it works just like stock. BTW, it's about $6 a can and you will need 3-4 cans for a complete refill if it is empty.

you can get a licence thru a.s.e. or m.a.c.s. --but I think you have to prove you worked on cars professionally for 2 years before you can get it. Even then If you get caught handling the stuff with out all the $$$ equip (recovery mach etc ) its a 10k buck fine or something like that. Switch to 134--I did and I have the 12 licence and the equipment. You will need to buy a can of 134 oil charge and then remember that 134 uses 85% of the 12 charge. Take it to your local a/c shop and have em recover your remaining r-12 (if there is any) they usually don't charge as they get to keep yer 12.

The last time I bought parts at the local Chevy dealership here in CT. They were advertising 50 lb canisters {r12} for sale. So I guess one doesn't need a license here.

Nope --federal law--they were probably advertising for the local shops who buy parts there. Dealerships sell a lot of freon that way because only a shop owner will buy in bulk --so they have very little mark up on it to get buisness in the door. We bought ours fron the local ford dealer cause he had the best price in town. Will also let you know, I have been checked by the epa personally. They pose as reg customers get you to work on a car then pull out the federal id. The chances of getting caught doing it at your home are slim. They do however treat freon like illegal drugs and set up fake buyers for sting operations.(know of this first hand as my boss got busted in just such a deal)
