I noticed recently that the trans cooler lines run VERY close to the exhaust pipe with NO heat shielding. I wonder if that's a factor...

Added a hayden 678, was able to mount it without removing the shroud ( installed with easy access inside the front spoiler )( pic below )
Strange but it leaked more
Got a can of Trans-x as a last shot.. Now it only leaks in Reverse

Trans cooler never gets hot, stays nice and cool

ohh i see how you are, just after i've been doing all that thinking about what your problem was you went and changed the problem

anyhow i am betting the problem was your 2-4 servo cover seal and while in there i would probably check out the other seals in there as well.

now that you used stopleak *shudders* you have sealed it i guess and as for leaking in reverse hmmm i suppose it is possible for the boost valve to be boosting pressures enough that its still causing the leak from the 2-4 servo cover. reason i say to check other seals in there as well is that there is a slight chance one is bleeding extra pressure to your cover (slight chance but possible) but bet the servo cover is leaking.

It's time for another trany or a rebuild unless i get a few bottles of bars leak ); really had hoped the trans cooler would have helped

? the 2-4 servo is on the outside of the case, pretty easy to get at and do or if you cant or dont want to a shop shouldnt charge much.

Well, that really narrows things down. Your possibilities are:

Leak at the seal where the pump goes into the case.
Leak at the seal where the torque converter goes into the pump.
Leak at the gasket between the pump and case.
Cracked case.
Bad weld on torque converter.

The problem with any of these possibilities is that the trans has to come out to fix them.

Found info on the pressures of the transmission, taking the trans cooler out of line and doing some more testing.

So I can't live with just driving in reverse, so can I slap a 7004 in it or a GM 4L60e from something other than a vet in her ?
I can find 4L60e's for good prices and have it rebuilt then do a swap, sine I am not sure what is really wrong with mine.

... As far as I can tell from the FSM , you have a 4L60 ... NO E ... any late '86 -up 700R4 or 4L60 will work if you shorten the output shaft to vette length and use the tailhousing off your trans ... you can verify visually ... if you have a TV cable and the harness connector is on the drivers side its a 700R4/4L60 , these also have a round governor cover on the drivers side near the speedo connector ... NO TV , NO governor , and harness connector on the pass side its a 4L60E ... the E-series is computer controlled and aftermarket controllers are expensive ..........

So according to the specs, I can use any Corvette 1982-1993 TH700-R4/4L60 as a direct swap ? or a GM TH700-R4/4L60 if I change out a few parts ?
Thanks

There are several internal differences between the Corvette 700r4s and the ones put in other cars. There IS a reason they put this on the bellhousing of the Vette version:

So I went for a drive today,in the local neighborhood speeds around 30 mph after 45 minutes no drips. Took it out on the open road for a quick trip above 50 mph and it blew out fluid. So R and OD it's a crop duster. Time to gather up a grand for a rebuild or transmission swap ... UGH
On a side note it was a nice sunny day for a slow cruise with the top down.

So a 700r4 would be a option along with the 4L60 ? Both from a vet.

700r4 and 4L60 are the same transmission. GM just changed the secret code. 4 means 4 forward gears and the 60 is basically how much torque it can handle. There are also 4L80s and a few other variations.

The 700r4 was modified in 1987 and they are much better than the previous versions
