Default Question replacing engine bay fuel lines

I replacing the head gaskets and while they're off I'm thinking of replacing the fuel filter and lines. I'm looking at one of the lines and it's got a little diaphragm looking object on it which I assume is to either prevent vapor lock, act as a one way valve or else smooth out pulses in the flow.

So my question is do I "need" this or can I replace the lines with new hoses?

Looking at this

Thanks

Thats the hose I used. Great stuff. The fittings make it very easy to use and it is alcohol proof.
No idea on the diaphram thing. Never had it on my 87.

If you're talking about the thing on the other line next to the fuel filter, that's just a coupler to connect the fuel lines together.
