Default Removing LT1 crank pulley question

To take off the crank pulley do I need to remove the big bolt at the end of the crank hub or just the three smaller bolts on the pulley itself.
I haven't done one in a few years.
Thanks,
Shawn

Only the three bolts, the center bolt only needs to be removed when pulling the hub.

Yea, and if it's never been off before, you wil most likely have to bang the crap out of it to get it off, crawl under car and get a piece of wood, jam it in behind it and bang away for a while and rotate the pulley every so often. It could be a bit*h some times.

Before you start banging away, spray all around the 3 bolts with Freeze-off. Let it sit for a while then bang away. I used a 1 1/2" dowel about a foot or two long from underneath the Vette. As said before rotate the engine after a few hits so it doesn't bind. Remember, the outer ring on the damper is only held on by a rubber gasket/ ring. Be patient.

I tried spraying and banging over a weeks time. pulley would not come off. Bought an inexpensive pulley puller, must be small to fit in, and it came off easily.

this approach showed up not to long ago in a similar post.

i can't see as its a very good idea to be pounding on the end of a crank shaft for any reason.

any direction you hit it from your beating on the main bearings or main thrust bearing.

I just took the one off last week to use it on my replacement engine as it was an aftermarket one. I had all the radiator cowlings already out and a two jaw puller worked. I know when I replaced my opti I ended up putting pry bars on each side, it worked but broke the plastic on the opti, that was shot anyway. I pulled the one on my replacement engine which was the stock one and had to reverse my arms on the puller to fit inside the pulley as the diameter was larger. Too bad GM didn't make it easier to removing and replacing the Opti.
