If you have a Bose radio, you are probably chasing a red herring. My 87 has speaker grilles in the dash, but they are dummies. That's why they're so quiet.
Nevertheless, to remove the top pad all you need to do is remove the two screws near the defroster vent and then a few that tie the pad into the left and center instrument panel. The screws face upward, and may be obscured on the left side by the cluster fascia. All the screws to remove the fascia are visible. The headlight **** is released by pushing the edge of a screwdriver into the slot on the side and giving a pull. When it's loose, pull the pad toward you. It will slide out. Good Luck.
