What are the best ways to increase performance in a 1987 Corvette?

Drifting
If the tires are old, change immediately and get an alignment after going through the suspension.
After you go through the car you may be surprised by the "performance" increase. A lot of these cars ride, handle, and accelerate much better after some maintenance TLC.
Other than that performance intake, heads, headers, exhaust, cam. Forget the throttle body airfoils, k&n air filter, throttle switch, and the rest of the gimmicks. They increase performance by making your wallet lighter.

What are you goals for "improved performance"? Will this be a daily driver, occasional drag racing, autocross, track days?? How many miles are on the car? Raising the HP and torque is one thing, but that power still has to go thru the trans, the diff, the u-joints, and the tires. Then you have to have good brakes to stop the car.
And probably most important what is your budget? I remember a sign in an old speed shop from years ago: "Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?"

Like I said in your other thread, after you get all maintenance done, think about gears, they will give you that acceleration you want. Not sure if you have an auto or manual trans, but both would benefit. 3.55 or even 3.73 depending on what trans you have.

I have an automatic. Would a shift kit make it quicker?

A shift kit won't actually make the car much quicker, but the shifts will be much more firm. The gears would make the car accelerate quicker, big difference in how it feels. With you having an auto I would stick with 3.55 gears. You could have 2 different hearts in your car it would have left with I think either 2.73 or at best 3.07. If you have the base rear, going to to 3.55 would be like a whole new car
