Best way to add horsepower to a C4 L98
I have a 1989 C4 L98 with 43K miles. I am looking to add horsepower. Currently the car has not been driven over 70 MPH. Would it be better to swap the L98 for an LT1 engine or add modifications to the L98 to get it up to 300HP? This car is all original.
Thanks,
Jimmyd

Getting more power from L98s isn't always easy! But, there is one easy method....Have you ever seen "The Flintstones"? Cut a hole in the floorboard so you can can use your feet like Fred!
Seriously though, exhaust is always the first suggested mod. Gears may be the next suggestion. Intake, cam, heads, and headers almost go together -- because of the need to pull the heads. If it's an auto, then you have to worry about how your Dana36 will hold up.
Unless you're ready to spend the big bucks (which if you're considering a LT1 swap...maybe), gears and exhaust are probably the easiest, best option.
Oh...and get that SOB above 70mph at least once/twice!

Seriously HP numbers aside, unless you are racing you will not miss the lt1. Lots of debate on the forum. The lt1 is a great motor but for everyday driving the l98 will do just fine. I started with a full exhaust from the manifolds back. I removed the precast and installed a high flow main. HUGE difference. Too many good exhausts to list. I went with magnaflow
Air cleaner helps but I think throttle body and intake are next. Those mods and a good tune will get you close
There is alway the 383 option too.
Good luck

If you just want more vooma off the line and a better seat of the pants sensation and to smoke the tyres a little , change rear gears to a 3.55 or 3.7x .. most effective upgrade - especially if you never drive above 70mph
Generally , adding go fast goodies to boost HP requires a higher revving engine..an engine is merely an air pump - the more air you can get in , the more fuel you can burn ...

A Criminal Speeding Ticket "CST" a felony equal to stabbing someone to death.
Think about it. The guy with the knife will get off.
Wish you luck brother.
OP, the best mod I made was the cam and a tune.
Of course those were backed up with a hi-flow cat, Borlas, pre-cat removal and a few others.

I was advised to walk in and ONLY plead not guilty. Force the DA's office to spend lots of money they don't have as my bargaining chip. Worse case scenario is the same either way.
Best mods I made long tube headers, true dual exhaust 2.5", hi flow cats mufflers, roller rocker arms, cam, change air intake. There are a half dozen other changes as well.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. You have obviously never been in a court room before. A prosecutors dream ! Last I time I checked I was not guilty until proven guilty. If you chose to go and simply take whatever the state gives you be my guest.

I got caught speeding on my sport bike years ago. I had two policeman following me because I didn't stop right away. They told me I was doing 65 in a 40. I just said, "Yes I was", I figured I was gonna get a ticket anyway so, why not just tell the truth!
The policeman took my license and then came back and said, "I'm just giving you a warning this time"!
You've been to Court before and you still haven't learned anything?!...Get used to the inside of a Courtroom!
You're Obviously going to learn things the Hard way!........ You have a long road ahead of you...

No, I haven't because I own up to my acts and pay the fines.
