Do I need Shocks? 1990 Coupe with 60,000 miles
I just bought a 1990 COupe for my wife..It has 60,000 original miles and I am pretty sure the shocks have never been replaced...
It has the FE1 option (Soft Ride Suspension)
I can tell you it is pretty stiff... My C5 with Z51 rides much! Softer and smoother..
What shock do you suggest? Bilstein?

They prolly dont need it quite yet, but like Scorp said they tend to fall off at 70-80K

Are you sure the shocks are still good? Should I have a soft ride? I never drove a C4

Re: (chuckster)
ive never been in a C4 with a "soft" ride, theyre all pretty stiff especially 84's
If you think theyre bad, go ahead and replace them, wouldnt hurt. But if you want soft, i would look somewhere besides Bilstein.

Yes, the suspension C5 is that much more advanced.
You can get the shocks rebuilt by Bilstein. I think they do it for around ~$75 per. They'll revalve them softer or harder for a bit more $.

I laughed when I read "Soft Ride Suspension". I have the FE1 on my 1990, while not as stiff as a 1986 with Z51 on it, it is plenty stiff. In fact, I believe the front spring rates on a FE1 equipped 1990 are comparible to the 1996 Z51.
I just did a check and my mileage is around 68200 miles, 110,000km (used to thinking in km up here in Canada) I miss calculated in another post.
My shocks seem to be still fine, with no oil leaks, but will be on the look out over time for this.
Enjoy your 90!!

Hey Chuckster,
I replaced the shocks on my 89 (35k original miles) with KYB's. When I removed the old ones, you could compress them by hand and they would expand very slowly. I went with the KYB's because I don't do any racing. They provide a nice smooth ride without sacrificing handling. Whatever you decide, Good Luck.
