Default Camshaft Dowel VERY Short

Just had my 95 LT1 rebuilt as a 383, and had a new Lunati cam spec'd out by LE. Cam is already installed but when I checked the pin length for the opti I was surprised to find it incredibly short - only about .410" compared to the suggested .620". I attempted to pull it out a bit while installed in the engine, but it didn't want to budge at all. It seemed a little scary but after checking all the clearances, I honestly don't see how this is a problem. It appeared to be long enough, so I just installed the opti, hub, balancer, etc. I honestly think I'll be ok, but just wanted to run it by the forum before I drop the engine back in the car.

Does anybody have actual experience running short cam dowels like this?

I would call Lunati tomorrow and ask them what you should do?

There are 3 different dowel lengths depending on the intended application.
You appear to have one for a reg , non Opti SBC

Just talked to Lunati. Their opinion was that it should be good. According to their GM documentation, pre-96 LT1s/LT4s the dowel needs to be .300 and for the 96 and up it should be .620 which goes along with the general consensus. I'm not sure I understand why it is like this, because I didn't think there was a difference between the 95 and 96 LT1s.

I'm going to run it as is and see what happens. I checked the clearances on the opti, and I believe it should be enough. I guess I'll let you know what happens in the coming weeks.

Lunati has supplied you with the wrong information. 1995 and 1996 both use the long dowel pin. I would not run the car with the short pin.
