No overrdrive or third gear
My 1990 Corvette automatic transmission stopped shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Still runs fine in 1st and 2nd gear and in reverse but when starting out in drive it shifts OK through 1st and 2nd gear but when it shifts to 3rd it like it goes into neutral. Stops pulling. Gave no warning, no noise no slipping. Had driven about 150 miles with no problem. Stopped at a stop sign and when I pulled out it shifted normally through 1st and 2nd and into 3rd where it was just like shifting into neutral. It stopped pulling and the engine just revved up. Checked the fluid level. It was OK. Fluid was clean and red colored no smell of burned clutch of anything. Any idea what would cause this?

Nothing electrical on a 90 700R4 Transmission.
Check the transmission fluid level and color (should be a deep cherry color). Also, the fluid should not smell burnt.
Otherwise, it's time for a rebuild.

Sounds like you lost the 2-3 shift, nothing electrical for you to check, its internal.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago in my 4L60E 1995.
3-4 clutch pack wore out. Fluid should smell burnt and gritty.
As the others said, rebuild time. Sorry.
I did mine myself and it's been over 100,000 miles.

This is the funny thing, fluid isn't burnt and isn't gritty at all. The car only has 66, 000 on it. I checked the fluid, When I got to work. I'll check it again on my lunch break

isn't possible that these symptoms are due to a filter that dropped out of location? that does not sound likely, I know, but the '91 is a push-in filter, no bolt.
the fluid is "ok", no burnt smell, low miles. do the clutch packs go like that, no slippage?

relax, slow down! I was raising the question, rather than suggesting a solution. If it ran ok in 1 and 2, it is not as likely to be a filter. had one fall out in an early 3 spd Chevelle. As I recall, all gears were slipping.

You could always check the adjustment on the TV cable. Judging by your symptoms though I am going to my money on its time for a rebuild and you did lose the 3,4 clutch pack. There are no electronics related to shifting in the 700 r4. All shifting is controlled by the TV cable and the governor.

Ok, is this issue I'm having a common issue with the 700r4. Also does anyone know of a good overhaul kit to buy. I really don't wanna go back into the tranny again. The car is basically stock. It just has a chip in it that's all.

I did my rebuild in 2008. I found a AC Delco kit on eBay for $75. Gaskets, frictions and steels. I did not change the bushings or the torque converter. I spent about another $75 or so on additional seals, ATF and filter. My rebuild 'on the cheap' has lasted over 100,000 miles/5 years.
Good luck!

The fluid is clean, when I bought the car the previous owner had a tranny flush done. Now maybe there was a issue then and that's the reason why he did it. But when I got the car the fluid was the color it should be. Also there wasn't any smell of burnt clutches or grit in the oil. Even now the oil isn't burnt and there isn't any grit in the fluid.
