Default ZF vs. T56

Why did GM put a ZF in the Corvette & a T56 in the f body cars? Seems like the T56 is cheaper & easier to work on. Also, the Mustangs that have the T56 have a 5th = .8 & 6th = .63 which seems like much beteer gearing than the .75 & .50 for 5th & 6th that the ZF has.

I thought part of it was to have a trans that would hold up to the LT5.. the only main difference for the LT5 trans and the L98/LT1 was the input shaft length (as far as the trans goes)

I dont think the T56 was available when GM signed the contracts to get the ZF6. T56's are in C5s.

AFAIK the ZF6 is much stronger than the T56. I know a few C5 owners who wish they still had the ZF6 they had in their previous C4s.

I agree, I think the first use of the T56 was the '92(?) Viper.

the ZF6 was also a co-development between GM and ZF... a modification of the one used by BMW in their 850.

The ZF is a much stronger tranny than the T56... much stronger.

FWIW, ZF makes some of the best gear drive systems on the planet. period.

The ZF was available first. I disagree on the ZF being stronger having owned both the other car was a 94 Z28. The C5 T56 is put under more stress with the torque tube and rear mounting. However the F-body and Viper T56s are very tough. If it wasn't such a PITA swap I would drop a T56 in my car before rebuild a ZF.

I don't think it will work... the T56 has a different shift method... and I don't think it won't line up correctly.

Stronger the ZF may be, but for most people that will only translate into ob$cene repair bills. You haven't lived the Corvette experience fully until you have had a ZF rebuilt. I should know, between what I have paid and what was covered under warranty mine has amassed ~$7k in bills.

Yes Zf rebuiilds are crazy a cheap one is $3,500, and a T56 from a f-body can be rebuilt for $1,000. One guy posted that he swapped a $+3 for a T56, but never posted pics. The shifter does not line up with a C4, and a way to mount the C beam to the trans would have to be made.
