'85 700R4...Lost 3rd gear again...
Drove my '85 to work Tuesday...car ran fine...not a hint of trouble. As I was returning home from work that afternoon, 3rd gear started slipping...no power to the wheels after the 2-3 shift. :cry :cry Fluid level was ok, fluid color appeared normal, no bubbles, but smelled like burned clutch-pack. 1st & 2nd gear ran just fine. I limped home 30+ miles in 2nd gear...25-30 mph. :( Probably not the best idea to drive it home like that, but the trans will be coming out anyway I look at it.
This is the second time this has happened to this trans since I've had the car. Automatic trans was rebuilt approximately 7000 miles ago, by previous car owner. Since then, the first time 3rd gear was lost was 3620 miles since the apparent rebuild, same shop repaired trans at no cost...one time deal. They told me that they replaced the 3rd gear clucth-pack, but I feel that they just did some kind of 'band-aid' fix to get me out of there. Now 3400 miles since that first repair, 3rd gear is gone again. If anyone finds it, please email me....
There is no way that I would use the same trans shop again, even if they were to repair it at no charge...Now I'm looking for a reputable trans rebuilder in southern California...If anyone has any reccomendations, please let me know. Thanks

Probuilt is the place you want to talk to. Tell them that Jesse sent you. They just did my tranny for 1500 no core fully shipped! They have a 1yr warrenty.
He has these trannies in cars running 10s. He is the only person I know of that can build a tranny to take that kind of punishment.
Check them out. They are at http://www.pro-built.net
you will be happy you did.

Thanks ski_dwn_it, I'll take a look at what they have to offer. I'll have to weigh it against some of the more local places as well.

If the 3-4 pack is lasting 3000 plus miles, then I think you have an internal leak, which is not building the proper pressure and causing the clutches to slip too much, thus lowering their life span. My guess is that this shop did not replace all of the bushings when they rebuilt it, and when they fixed it they just replaced the clutches and did not correct the problem that caused them to wear out that quick. Before you lost the 3rd shift, was it a quick solid shift?

I agree, they just fixed the result, not the cause...
when they fixed it they just replaced the clutches and did not correct the problem that caused them to wear out that quick.

Yep, so many times, shops just replace the worn parts without doing a case leak test. You should be getting more miles from your rebuilt trans.

I'd have to look at my manual and research the oil flow routing, but preliminary guess is that the return spring on the 3-4 is wore out, and that is not normaly replaced in a rebuild. Since you had quick shifts the wear would have to occur when 3-4 disengages. If its not disengaging quick enough then the clutches are slipping, causing your advance wear.
