Default air filter mod: genius or insanity

My vert filter housing had the typical broken lid fastening point referenced time and again here. So I took it all out to see what I could do with it.

A few folks have cut out the cover to increase air flow. Or purchased a precut cover for $50. or so. I decided to just try eliminating the cover all together. Takes care of 2 issues at once. So I bought some industrial strength velcro and outlined the filter opening and filter with it.

The glue on the velcro didn't stick to the housing very well so I used some welding glue I had in the toolbox to reinforce it

Then for insurance and extra support I added 4 screws.

Took it for short drive and everything stayed in place. Can't say it vastly improved performance but I'm sure it's breathing all the air it can with this set up. The unmuffled sound from up front is very cool. The K&N was already there. I cleaned and recharged it before install. I don't rack up a lot of miles and make every effort to avoid bad weather driving so am hoping this will hold up. If not I'll try other tried and true solutions detailed here previously.

You can pick up a new or second hand one, yikes $199 for new is a bit steep.

What ever works will do, i like your solution but maybe felcro stuck to the filter and housing will work well.

I re-enforced my air intake housing tabs some years ago with a couple of aluminum strips pop riveted to the housing, am sure there are plenty of cheap second hand air intake housings online.

Look at the link if you want to be shocked at the price of a new one.

Having a filter like that is ok as long as it doesn't get wet, same principle as having a cotton cone filter.

Water won't hurt it. It's a synthetic mesh, not paper.

It looks unfinished to me?...

IMO, I would've fabricated an aluminum frame to create a bezel to secure the filter and provide a more finished look...

They say there's a thin line between the two and, quite frankly, I'm not sure upon which you are standing here...

Hey, so long as it works that's the main thing...

I agree it looks unrefined... my thinking was it doesn't show. But if I started going to shows and popping the hood I'd wanna clean up the look. I like the aluminum frame idea but my fabrication resources and abilities are nil.

I think you've introduced one more ingenious, DIY Corvette mod!

Well this one was supposed to be Top Secret and I wanted to do it before someone else did because I can't understand why it has not been done yet but here it goes. Here is a photo of a stock 85 front end

I've always wanted to pull the front end tail light assy and run ram air with screens down the throat of my TPI. Somehow Someway
